WHY IS RISK MANAGEMENT NECESSARY?
Protect to Serve
There are so many incredible organizations that have a component focused on serving youth. However, it must be acknowledged that there are also individuals whose main goal is to prey on youth to satisfy their selfish desires. Risk management puts up organizational firewalls to discourage the embracing of those individuals that only want to satisfy their urges to the detriment of these organizations.
Without proper firewalls and the process of consistent monitoring, these organizations that really are focused on assisting youth are in danger of becoming prey themselves. This lack of attention could ultimately result in them having an incident that would directly hurt a youth and ultimately effect the health of the organization along with related stakeholders.
CONSULTATION SERVICES DEFINED
RISK MANAGEMENT ASSESSMENT
To best determine how our services can be customized to meet the specific risk needs of each client, a full scale risk assessment is the first initial step. This process allows the client and Secure Child to learn the areas that are properly covered along with the areas that potentially need attention.
CONSULTATION & COLLABORATION
Following the completion of the full-scale Risk Management Assessment process, we will work collaboratively with the client to best equip them with the knowledge and systems needed to create a 'Safety First' culture.
ENHANCEMENT OF S.O.P.'S
The adjustments of certain S.O.P.'s (Standard Operating Procedures) is often a necessary step towards creating a stronger foundational structure for a 'Safety First' culture. We will give recommendations of which S.O.P.'s need attention and propose alterations in the system to address those areas.
CREATION OF TEMPLATES
One of the main rules for controlling risk is documenting, documenting, documenting. Any areas identified through the assessment process as requiring more or specific documentation will be addressed. We will prepare templates of proposed forms and/or internal documents to improve the recordkeeping system.
FOLLOW-UPS
The completion of the first four steps listed as services will have minimal effect, if there is no consistent oversight or monitoring of this newly updated foundation. As part of our complete package, we will return quarterly, then annually to ascertain the application of the 'Safety First' system created. In addition, if new issues arise in the interim of these follow-up visits, we will create a proposal of how best to address those new concerns.
ABOUT ME
Consulting with Purpose
Wendi Smith holds a B. A. Degree from Oberlin College and her Juris Doctorate (J.D.) Degree from Cleveland Marshall College of Law.
Following a potpourri of experiences of working with entities that serve children/youth, Wendi noticed that more times than not, risk management issues were being minimized or even totally neglected. This puts the children/youth served in a very dangerous and precarious position of being open prey. Wendi has witnessed two extreme types of situation that are equal in their results of not fully protecting the children/youth they serve; 1) entities that have little to no policies and procedures, OR, 2) entities that have excessive policies and procedures but no committed oversight to monitor consistent application. Those who seek to violate the sanctity of an organization intentionally pursue these two types of entities.
Spanning over four decades, Wendi has advocated and supported the protection of over 5000 adult and child relationships. Wendi’s passion to promote the protection of children/youth served by various entities led to the creation of Secure Child, LLC in 2019.

TESTIMONIALS REGARDING MY SERVICES
"I met Wendi Smith after she had been brought into a project whose aim was to professionalize and scale a non-profit with great potential but only limited traction after more than a decade of operation. Her task was to assess “what was there”, and more importantly what was needed, to transform this underperforming entity into the successful, sustainable and transformational organization it could be."
"Wendi developed a comprehensive program outline that identified and addressed the disparate needs of multiple constituents – eg, the onboarding, training and managing of employees and students in the program; recruiting and managing volunteers; roles and responsibilities of board directors; and not least, fundamentals of administrative, compliance, record-keeping and risk management for the organization’s leadership. She codified all of this in a detailed, clearly organized operational handbook for the organization. She delivered what she promised on time and within budget. Finally, I would observe that she was consistently professional and respectful but also direct with the founder/CEO, who did not always welcome what he needed to hear."
Thruston Morton, Founder of Global Endowment Management, LP
"It was a pleasure working with Wendi - even when the project became challenging she maintained a positive attitude and stayed focused on helping our client."
"Wendi's work ethic speaks volumes - she listens carefully to what is expected and is thorough and meticulous in delivering an exemplary product. The pride she takes in her work is truly inspiring.'
